Merle Richard Rose (1933- ) was born in 1933 in Fredonia, a borough in western Pennsylvania. As the youngest of three children, Rose's parents encouraged him to start his own businesses as a child. Some examples of his business ventures include a popcorn stand and a fruit stand on the side of the road. Reno M. Antonietti graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with his A.A.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1958. While at the university, Antonietti was a member of the RIT tennis team, belonged to the Mechanical Students' Association, and was actively involved in the Theta Gamma (now Phi Sigma Kappa) fraternity. It is unclear when the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) first admitted minority students. However, it appears as though the first African American students entered the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (renamed RIT in 1944) during the early 1900s.
